Our family can't say enough about On The Mat! Master Melody and her awesome team of Ninjas are like a parent's secret weapon. Our son goes to practice Tae Kwon Do, he ends up learning about character, respect, self-control and other priceless virtues! The family environment and friendships fostered at this club have added a beautiful dimension to each of our lives. I have as much fun catching up with friends each week as Robert Paul has on the Dojo. We are grateful to be apart of such an amazing program.

The best money that our family has invested in the development of our child! As an early childhood educator, I am very picky about extra curricular activities! On the Mat is the model for positive reinforcement! They treat everyone like family! We are so grateful that we are there and only wish we had found them sooner!

No better place than OTM for brinhing the best out of your child. The instructors are some of the best and the owner Melody Shuman is the most knowledgeable in child neuroscience. Many martial art facilities around the world look to her and use her Skillz methods for teaching children. AAA++++++

We signed our 5 year old up for the free trial over the summer to try out something new and keep him active during the summer. He absolutely fell in love with it and asked if he could go every day! The curriculum is perfectly geared toward each particular age group. The instructors are so engaging and committed. The skills and confidence our son has gained just in a few short months are priceless. Our summer activity has quickly become part of our regular year round schedule and I foresee him continuing for years to come. OTM rocks!!

Parent SKILLZ: Edutainment

Hey Parents,

I wanted to share some great tips on the Parent SKILLZ strategy: EDUTAINMENT.

As I posted last week, “Be the parent your child needs you to be.”

Children hardly ever embrace the concept of learning. As a parent, this can be very frustrating because our primary role is to teach children skills necessary to become independent individuals. With that said, being an ‘EDUTAINING’ parent is a key strategy for success!

So, what does it mean to use EDUTAINMENT?

It means abandoning traditional parenting methods of lectures and criticism, and focusing on making learning fun!

One suggestion is to use healthy competition when teaching your child how to build good habits, such as performing chores.

For example: instead of criticizing your child for not making his/her bed properly, make it fun by saying something like: “Let’s see who can make their bed look nicer, me or you! If you can make your bed look nicer than mine, then I will play a game of your choice once we are done. But before we compete, let me show you how to make your bed look nice.”

Another suggestion is to make your child’s environment more fun while they are doing homework.

For example: build a fort in the living room, or pitch a tent in the backyard. Use a diffuser with soothing smells and play some stimulating music. Also give them some fun, but healthy snacks while they work.

A third suggestion is to help your child learn a new skill while documenting it on video.

For example: Teach your child how to bake a cake while recording it on video for your friends and family. Set the camera up on a tripod, and commentate it just like a regular cooking show.

Notice these strategies are about making learning fun. The key is to focus more on how to help your child enjoy the process, which means you need to think like they do. This means being the parent they need you to be!

So, give my recommendations a try this week, and next week be on the lookout for a Parent SKILLZ worksheet where you’ll fill in the blanks to help improve your EDUTAINMENT skills with your child!

Thank you for your attention, and have fun building the Parent SKILLZ: EDUTAINMENT this week!
